We've done the 7 mile float serveral times. Before kids - we did sit on top kyacks, this year we did canoes. We enjoyed ourselves everytime we've been out there. It's easy paddling, a few small (and I mean small) rapids and beautiful views of the Blue Ridge mountains and Biltmore Estate. We like to take a picnic to eat while our daughter gem mines once we are finished with the paddleing.

As the other reviewer mentioned, it is not an easy paddle at the beginning with the very large rocks and low water. That in itself is not the problem.

First, the girl/woman working the desk and making reservations was unfriendly and rude. I should have followed my instinct and left at that point. She was rude on the phone and in person. You would think one working in the tourism industry would expect questions. Apparently, visitors to the area are supposed to know everything about her company and she has zero patience for questions.

Secondly, there was an extensive intro including safety, what to expect, etc. There was ZERO mention of the possibility of getting very stuck the entire first 1/3 of the trip. This was a major pain since we were in a canoe with a small child. Had I known to expect this, I may have handled it better or chosen not to take the trip. But, like I said, there was ZERO mention that I would get stuck or how to handle it. Some guidance of how best to get un-stuck or watching out for ripples to gauge where the rocks were etc. would have helped tremendously and I would have been prepared to handle it. I also would have prepared my young child, who was terrified each time we "crashed." It was presented to me as a float trip. Needing to get out of the canoe 7 times to get unstuck does not count as a "float trip." After the trip, all employees acted like this should have been expected. It wasn't.

I would not recommend this company. Go somewhere else.

I'll begin this by saying we are not white-water kayakers. We have rented kayaks 4-5 times, always on calmish lakes and rivers, and have always enjoyed our time. We moderately enjoyed most of our 3-hour, 7-mile float/paddle trip on the French Broad with Southern Waterways, too.

This was June, 2008. If you have followed any of WNC's troubles, you'll know the drought has dropped the river level to a trickle. Believe me, this will impact your trip. The company will tell you that your experience will be "altered" by the water level, but hardly explain that you will have to pry yourself off of rocks 7-8 times in the first hour. At least, that is what I had to do. The water was low enough for me to get a foot out, or my hand, or the paddle, but dodging the rocks took much of the fun out of the trip. Hanging up was even less fun.

The calm, deeper sections of the trip were very enjoyable, and as we took the 9AM trip (to avoid the afternoon thunderstorms) the two of us were on our own. Very pleasant. We caught the requisite glimpse of the Biltmore, too.

Remember (fresh, working) sunscreen! Don't rely on last season's, as I did, or the tops of your feet and shins will remind you for weeks to come.

Our biggest problem (and what ruined the trip for us) was the exit, back at the dock. Each time we've kayaked previously, there has been a beach, or a ramp onto which you are dragged, so you can exit on land. Not here. Here, you are brought parallel to the dock, and with one employee in the water steadying the kayak (and what good is that?) you get out into the river. Well. Guess what happened?

There was no handle on the dock. NOTHING to hold onto. The river bottom was slippery. My husband lost his footing, and got dunked, ruining both his cellphone and his camera. We had each remained dry the entire trip, until this final second.

I would recommend waiting until the French Broad is flowing with a greater volume, and do this trip only in a bathing suit, regardless of your ability. Their help at the exit was a joke. I'll not rent from them again.
