The humpback whales visit Maui yearly between November to May, with the peak being mid January to March. There is no “better” time to go, as the whales are active all the time. The morning tours will have calm waters, perfect if one gets sea sick easily. Mid morning tours usually fill up fast, just because a lot of people don’t like to get up early and it’s a little early for swimming. In afternoon the trade winds usually pickup, causing a few more waves and rolling action. And the late afternoons are great for sunset pictures. So each time has their own unique opportunities. And, in fact, you can see the whales from the shoreline and even hear them sing if you put your head under water or while snorkeling.
