I was in the UK for a once-in-a-lifetime vacation and research trip for a writing project. Between my travel dates and their availability, I was only able to secure two nights' stay in the Glenburnie suite. Wish I'd had more time because the castle, grounds, and area are charming and would require a longer stay to fully explore and appreciate.

I cannot say enough about the staff and their attention to me. Caretaker Martin was responsible for a warm, personal welcome and was attentive and helpful throughout my stay. Guest coordinator Amanda offered me travel advice which enabled me to successfully make my outgoing train at an ungodly hour, and Sam went above and beyond to help me with research I am doing for my project, which relates to a member of the Maitland (the castle's) family. Her suggestions about reviewing archives I didn't even know about and referring me to the national archives to view them ended up making my research more fruitful than I could have hoped for. I will always be grateful for this.

The suite was comfortable and well-appointed and was a much better value than what I paid for 5-star hotels in London and Edinburgh.

If I had one suggestion that would have made my stay more comfortable, it would be for them to offer some on-site or in-room concessions, even if only in the form of a stocked mini-bar offering some soft drinks or water as there is no where to get those things if you do not go into town. You can order breakfast hampers to make a full or continental breakfast, but these have too much food for a single person and/or a very short stay (as in my case).

If you choose to stay, my advice is to allow yourself at least 4 or more nights to fully explore the area and activities, and to come with your own food/snacks or to allow enough time to venture into town to get the provisions you'll need for the duration of your stay. Knowing this now, I will be better prepared for when I return, which I hope to do one day.

We enjoyed an excellent guided tour of this splendid castle today. I thought it was excellent value, lasting an hour and a half and concluding with tea/coffee and a biscuit. Our guide was knowledgeable and we learned a lot about the family and the house itself. He also had an streak of humour which was much appreciated. The interiors are quite mixed from the darkness of the Victorian lower rooms to the brightness of the upper floor which includes fantastic plaster ceilings and some really beautiful furniture and paintings. You can tell its a lived in house and that adds to its charm. I had a great time and would highly recommend visiting.

In an area of Scotland with several magnificent houses and castles, Thirlestane matches the best of them for interest and history. Owned by the same family since it was built, our guide explained the various phases of the castle’s life up to the present day. Our tour lasted one and a half hours and concluded with tea and teacake. An excellent day out in a very special place.

Exceptional communication with staff before our stay. Informing us of options available to us & events that would be occurring during our stay. Accommodations very well exceeded our expectations! We met Edward Maitland-Carew and several staff members and all of them welcomed us like long lost family. More than friendly & helpful with all our needs. Highly recommended!

My adult daughters and I just returned to the states from our visit to Thirlestane Castle. We stayed in the Earl and Countess apartment which is lovely and being on the second floor has lovely views of the grounds. I highly recommend the following: tour of the castle; the Cosmopolitan cocktails; walking the beautiful grounds; the Spotty Dog which sells the best black bomber cheese; the Flat Cat Gallery; the Firebrick Brasserie (make reservations) and remember to drive on the left but you can park any which way you want in Lauder! It is worth the trip just to see the giant lorries pass each other on the narrow streets. Using Thirlestane as our base, we visited Abbotsford House, St Abbs, Paxton House, Melrose and Floors Castle, all easy drives from the castle.

All of the people we met were extremely pleasant and kind. The team at Thirlestane are very welcoming and helpful. Amanda gave us great tips on the best things to see and do in the area and beyond. We followed her advice and had a lovely trip to the Highlands after our stay at Thirlestane. Martin helped us with a tricky lock and is the resident Jack of all trades. Gemma and Suzy provided the responsive, well-cared for horses that we had the privilege to ride. We hated to leave and would return if we had the chance. It was hard to come back to reality.

Thirlestane Castle is a quintessential country house.

We had a fascinating tour of the house, lead by a Volunteer Guide who’s passion for the house shone through. The tour covered a large amount of the building (almost 20 rooms), from more intimate, informal areas which are clearly still loved and used (the house is *not* a museum), to the vast state apartments. ‘Jaw-dropping’ is a cliché phrase, but is an accurate description of the State Rooms - all of which have unbelievable plaster ceilings and contain a profusion of excellent art and furniture. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, you enter the Dining Room, which is lined with family portraits - all well hung and, importantly, well lit. Clearly, great care and attention has been given to the recent refurbishment works. An added touch was tea and coffee in the old Servants Quarters after the tour, with a Tunnocks Teacake - tongue-in-cheek but perfect.

Excellent, up-to-date Guide Book too, available from the Giftshop.

PS: Don’t let a Guided Tour put you off - I like to ‘free flow’, but we were two in a tour of perhaps 16, and both felt that you were able to both wander and your own pace and have a personal tour simultaneously.

The parkland and grounds were equally as impressive, and included circuit walks, formal gardens, and a lovely surprise was the idyllic river below the castle which you could stroll down to. All immaculately maintained.

Also very pleased to see Electric Charging points.

In short - unmissable if in the Borders.

Stopped in on the way to Edinburgh and unfortunately arrived too late for a house tour. Opted instead to pay for a walk around the grounds (with my wife and daughter) and found...

Piles of dog mess everywhere, including in the children's play / picnic area. Not fresh poop - it clearly hadn't been cleared for several days (and it must have been a big dog...).

Very loose and poorly maintained geotextile grids on the signed paths forming a very real trip hazard - not just sticking up a bit, they were a mess.

Rubbish, including a used condom wrapper!, on the rear stone steps of the lawns.

Nails protruding from wood on the ground on the path, exposed cables on the ground and a smashed gate (these are quite close to the house, but its not fully clear if they were part of the estate. They were certainly on the woodland walk).

No formal gardens to see - just lawns.

This was all on a day when they had dozens of children attending a PE event. It was blatantly obvious that no care had been taken to inspect or properly maintain areas that they are charging for access to.

It was so bad that this was the first time I have ever asked for a refund, which was extremely awkward.

Thank you for taking the time to review Thirlestane Castle and we are sorry that your experience did not meet the high standards that we aim to achieve. I can assure you that your comments have been acknowledged and immediate actions have been taken following your feedback. Our woodland walk suffered severe damage from Storm Arwen last year and our team are still working to clear the last of the extensive damage. We are incredibly sorry that this negatively impacted your time with us. The team are working hard to rectify any problems you have reported. If you would ever like to visit Thirlestane Castle for a tour please contact our office and we would be happy to offer you complimentary tickets.

E' un castello veramente magnifico. Vale la pena visitarlo sia negli interni che sono stupendi, sia i giardini che sono idilliaci.

Visited here mid week so it was nice and quiet, we booked the tour and so glad that we did as it was very insightful. Our guide Carol was very knowledgeable without being robotic as is often the case. The Castle is steeped in history and makes a very pleasant 2 hour visit and the free cup of tea and cake at the end of the visit is a lovely bonus. Bargain !!
