There is something magical about this Island. The last visit there we toured the Roosevelt Cottage. Had tea with Eleanor mid morning.
Stayed at a wonderful B&B Owen House Country Inn and Gallery. They served us a luscious blueberry pancake breakfast with sausage, bacon juice and plenty of coffee/tea.. The home itself is a historical building compete with a wonderful view of the water. We watched eagles glide past the front lawn. Hosts are very accommodating and shared some great stories about their history in the home and their own travels. There were fresh flowers in our room from the garden as a special welcome for our friends B'day.

Since we were in Lubec, we thought we would pop over and see the Roosevelt cottage and have "tea with Eleanor." Time got away from us, so we arrived in time for the tea, which involves presentations about Eleanor Roosevelt's life while guests have hot tea and ginger cookies made from Eleanor's own recipe. I would say that your experience will vary depending on who the staff are and who the other guests are as well. For our visit, the first half of the talk was interesting and informative, but the second half was a rambling collection of anecdotes that encouraged some older gentlemen in the audience to offer up their *Franklin* Roosevelt stories. (Perhaps they were not aware that the focus of the experience was Eleanor Roosevelt?) At any rate, the way the seating is arranged, it is nearly impossible to slip out unobtrusively, but it was very tempting to just hop up and head for the door as the hour-long event pushed towards an hour and a half. If I knew then what I know now, I would Google Eleanor Roosevelt's biography and use the time to see the cottage instead.

We spent 2 nights here so we could have a full day exploring the island. Despite rain, we had a great time. We spent much of the day at the Roosevelt park, which was terrific--a highlight of our Downeast trip. We also drove to Head Harbour Light Station and to Mulholland Point Lighthouse. Had very good meals at The Porch and the Prince Cafe in the Roosevelt park. We treated ourselves to a waterfront cabin at Friars Bay, where we could watch the tides rolling in and out from our huge window despite the rain. It was interesting talking to local residents about life on the island when the rest of Canada is so hard to get to, especially life during the pandemic. If it hadn't rained so much, we would have walked some of the trails. Not for everyone (not geared to children), but if you're looking for a slow-paced getaway, consider Campobello Island.

Yes, I have seen more picturesque coastal scenery. Yes, I have seen more photographic lighthouses. We had a lovely time visiting here and were glad we made the decision to come after talking about it for three years, postponed because of Covid. We found the locals to be warm, welcoming, and proud of their island.

WE spent the entire day on Campobello. There is a very helpful welcome center as you drive off the causeway on to the island. They had maps and made suggestions on our likes. We visited the lighthouse, the Roosevelt Camp and some other houses, took a lovely hike on the western side of the island and a great hike to the lighthouse. You can easily spend a few days poking around and have a fun time. There were some nice restaurants in the isldand as well.

Getting over to the island isnot worth the hassles and the island scenically doesn't standout whatsoever from the entire Down east area.No town on the island to speak of and good luck finding a variety of fresh picnic foods."Tea with Eleanor"might interest someone that knits doilies.I much preferred Bar Harbor not far but worlds away in things to see and do,shopping, dining, and yes better scenery!

This visit was a bucket list item for me. It did not disappoint. The late season visit meant a private tour. Simply wonderful.

I loved seeing part of history that i knew little of, the tea with Eleanor was excellent, as was the tour of the roosevelt summer cottage, with all contents..the island was beautiful with lighthouses and easy to get around..we took 2 ferries over to the island which was fun, too.

I don't know why there are not more cyclists on Campobello! The roads are very good and there is very little traffic. However, it is HILLY. You need to be a strong rider or have an ebike. I used an ebike (all the fun and none of the misery) and my husband rode his road bike. There are wonderful views, beaches, lighthouses --everything you could want. There are also gravel roads and bike paths in the FDR park if you have fatter tires. We had a fantastic time. We also took the ferry to nearby Deer Island and rode there, which was even hillier. We ate most meals at The Porch on Campobello. The food was good and the staff very friendly. Maybe I should not be giving away the secret of this great location.
