The Waterloo Bridge by Telford - the main bridge into / out of Betws-y-Coed.
Bit of a traffic pinch point with the adjacent A5-A470 road junction.
Useful piece of infrastructure - but not really a tourist point.

Nice piece of history to visit. but hard to get a good view of it. We saw it almost by surprise just before driving over it, as there's no view point or lay by , or parking that we know of to access or view it. We waited for our return trip to pull over on the road and walk back towards it in a field to get our photos.

No doubt it's a good bridge being the seventh cast iron one but, it says that it was built in 1815 by Thomas Telford. The design looks later, as it was widened in 1923 with the original structue moved to the outside. If you know this it all makes sense.

It is always worth stopping by the bridge - especially to see the inscription on the arches. There is alot of history attached and there is an information aboard closeby.

Hubby and me have driven across this masterpiece of a bridge numerous times. On a recent Wednesday, we decided to walk across it (there is a pavement on both sides). It is Grade 1 listed and was designed by the talented Thomas Telford in 1815. His friend, William Hazledine, produced the cast iron work in 1816 at Plas Kynaston foundry in Cefn Mawr near Ruabon. The bridge takes the busy A5 road over the River Conwy and spans 32 metres (105 feet).

It is named after the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 when Britain defeated Napoleon Bonapart in Belgium (endng 23 years of war with France). At each corner of the bridge are 4 decorative national emblems = a red rose (England), thistle (Scotland), shamrock (Ireland) and a leek (Wales).

Next time you are in Betws, take a closer look at this bridge and see if you can spot all of the emblems.
