The Rhymer's stone probably isn't the most exciting thing to see in the borders, but it's a nice detour if you'e in the Melrose area. You can drive up or walk from Melrose - it only take about 15 minutes but there isn't pavement all the way up so take care. It's a lovely walk, with beautiful views of the gentle rolling hills. There's a table along the way too so you get enjoy the view of some lovely horses too.
There's some seating at the top just next to the stone, where you can continue to enjoy the view whilst taking a break from your walk (the walk isn't long but it is all up hill)

This is absolutely abysmal. There is like no history and the history is fake, bad and boring but at least the views were great.

I have given this 4 stars but can easily understand why some people would rate it 1. If you have an interest in True Thomas it is a must, if not, it's not really worth a visit. The main problem is that the stone was originally placed in 1929 at the site of the Eildon Tree, but relocated in 1970. It does not explain where the original site was or indeed why it was relocated, so it's site here is of little relevance. Also curious to know why the road here is gated and no longer used by traffic, it does however provide a nice safe and quiet walk.

I read up about this before going to the Waverley Castle, so on the drivers day off we walked along the river into Melrose, then up the hill onto the main road crossing over & up past the Cemetary, on a good day you can see the Leaderfoot Viaduct. I would say it's about just over 1 mile from Melrose to Rhymer's Stone, the story behind it is interesting.

'This stone marks the site of the Eildon Tree where legend says Thomas the Rhymer met the Queen of the Fairies and where he was inspired to utter the first notes of the Scottish Muse'. I was utterly uninspired. Apparently erected in 1929 by Melrose Literary Society, for some reason it was re-erected in 1970, though i don't know by whom - or why.

Rhymers Stone is located up a track off the main road, approximately a mile outside Melrose. The best way to see this sight is part of a circular walk around the eidon hills, for example. The site itself is minimalist with a stone and an information board nearby. The views are pleasant but not worth a trip for one their own.

We came across the Rhymers Stone whilst on a circular walk from Melrose. There is a very good explanation/ information board at the stone. From here there are lovely views over the surrounding countryside.

Thomas the Rhymer is remembered with this memorial stone which includes a section of one of his works. The site is on a no through road on the edge of Melrose and the visit will only take few minutes. However, our party then went on to walk the Eldon Hills which are accessed by a path leading from the Rhymer car park.

I went with great enthusiasm to see the stone. Having read quite a few books and poems about Thomas. Knowing Steeleye Span's song very well, I was pleased to see the stone highlighted on the road signs. When I got there I was sadly disappointed. The plaque was rather tongue in cheek, and the stone' s inscription was almost unreadable. I felt not enough genuine information was given. It was not worth making thee detour to see it

Part of a 8 mile walk, although its less than 2 miles from Melrose centre. Most people have read the story associated with Thomas Rhymer and his tryst with the Fairy Queen. So if you are near it its worth just going to look to make you smile.
