One of the homes of the Duke of Buccleuch, as you would expect, it is an interesting example of its kind. Guided tours need to be booked in advance, with timed starts, so it was unfortunate that some people arrived as the party had finished the introductory chat outside the door when latecomers arrived.
As might be expected, you are told (several times) not to touch 'anything' as 'everything' is alarmed, and no photography. When this had been gone through again, even more latecomers turned up, and - you guessed.

However, the house is of interest, the decor somewhat gaudy, and overly furnished with French furniture for my taste, though the boulle cabinets scattered about are of outstanding workmanship. One cabinet would be enough to show off, a pair Is being greedy, and there are several pairs as you are conducted around the ground floor.
Much emphasis is placed by the guides on the artworks, which contain many of the most expensive artists work, evidence of past generations taking an interest in the finest workmanship to be had in its day.
Apart from the catalogue of possessions, though there was little said about the influence of the previous generations on the lives of their subjects, or the source of their wealth. More particularly, I felt more could have been made of the beneficent activities of the current Duke and family, and how they now fit into the ruling classes and government of their country. Scottish Lairds as a group have a historical reputation for self interest, and I felt that some of this history could have been confronted rather than confirmed.

The landscape tour was more forthcoming, with an enthusiastic guide who was knowledgeable and supportive of this century's activities of the estate, the wildlife, and regeneration.

The current complement of 4 gardeners must work a good shift to keep so much in a managed condition. I doff my cap to them, and did so to a lone gardener we came across in a flowerbed.

We didn’t go round the house this time as we wanted to make the most of the beautiful weather today but we intend to return for a house tour as the history sounds fascinating and the house looks very imposing from the outside. We started off with a very tasty soup and sandwich from the kitchen cafe before doing two of the four walking trails on offer. As we set off, we met one of the estate rangers, who was very friendly and helpful with recommendations. We followed his advice and were stunned by the beauty and tranquility of the walks round the lochs. Many great photo opportunities! Picnic benches at the most scenic spots! Idyllic! Overall, a wonderful day out.

I went there as a special treat to finish a wee holiday with the kids. But it's not that cheap just to enter the grounds (£7pp) and we were a bit let down by the attractions on their map which weren't actually accessible or weren't even there! Sorry, the 'Giant faces in the forests' which you spent 20 mins looking for with your kids aren't there anymore and hadn't been for a long time; the water garden is gone apart from a few certain plants which Percy Thrower might distinguish but not your average visitor; and the walled garden is actually all locked up so you can only peek through the bars in the door. And the terraces in front of the house they highlight can't be seen or experienced as whole gardens to the front of house are locked off unless you are on a group tour of the house.
The playpark was okay but not worth the £5 you have to pay for the kids just for a play. Can get a cuppa there and a soft soggy biscuit if you're brave. Central cafe in courtyard sold pricey ice-cream but seemed pleasant enough. All in all felt I was lining the pockets of the wealthy for not much in return. Felt a bit diddled. Back to Harestanes next time for a good playpark (free) with nice cafe.

Super tour of Bowhill House this afternoon. Friendly and knowledgeable staff with a real enthusiasm for the estate and the wonderful art collection within the house. Must go back to enjoy the estate grounds on a dry day. Nice cafe too. Really worth a visit if you have an interest in art, architecture and history.

Bowhill Estate is beautiful and very well maintained with a fantastic adventure playground for children and nice coffee trailer for adults. Lovely walks too (although with small children we didn’t go very far). We would definitely recommend it but be warned that the house is not open all year round. We had hoped to visit the galleries, house and cafe but this was not possible in April.

I didn't have a car, and walking an extra 6 miles (3 miles from Selkirk - the nearest place with buses - and then 3 miles back again) is not something I regret doing. That is saying something about what a wonderful place the estate is.

I came to go on a guided tour of the house. That was great (fantastic for anyone interested in historic sites), and I also thoroughly enjoyed my walks around the grounds. There are lovely woods, riverside walks and 2 lakes (an upper one and a lower one). There is also a hill, and I wish I had had time to climb all the way to the top. You got lovely views from the spot I did reach, though.

Next year when the estate is open again I plan to return, and explore the grounds more thoroughly, including going all the way up to the top of the hill.

Other attractions include a children's adventure playground, and a Victorian kitchen.

So yes, a really lovely place where you could easily spend the best part of a day.

We are members of the Historic Houses and this was our first visit to Boweshill. We had decided that we did not want to have a guided tour of the house but simply to visit the woodland and the garden. We were very disappointed to discover that the gardens were only open to those visitors on a guided tour - this is not usually the case! Although we did not of course have to pay, we thought to charge £6 each to visit the woodland and lake was expensive

Superb walks
Great place. Keep dogs away from algae infested lochs. The water can prove fatal. Huge amount of work has gone into repairing the handiwork of Storm Arwen.
