Hi Marco, thanks for writing this review. When happen not to see dolphins in the morning we are asked if it is more likely to see them in the afternoon and vice versa. Understandably, people try to find a justification for why the dolphins have not been seen. The best thing we can suggest is to ask the researchers on board for an explanation (you were on board with me). Marco, I answered your doubt about being "transparent" by asking questions. Please forgive me for that. ------------------------------------ - To be transparent - Do you think that on residential animals that respond to physical-biological parameters in a dynamic environment such as the Gulf of Alghero, providing information daily on presence/absence can allow people who do not know about the local ecology of the species to make predictions about the sighting probability over a period of 8 hours? Or on the month? So would tourists plan their holidays based on their calculations of which month and day are the best to do 4 hours of dolphin watching with us? I'm very flattered, thanks for considering us so much. Every day, month, and year is different from the others and the distribution as a whole changes. Marine traffic also changes according to the trend of the tourism market in Alghero and the reaction to the presence of boats changes according to the composition of the dolphin groups. Groups of adults and juveniles are more tolerant of the presence of boats than groups with calves and newborns, but this too is not always true because it depends on how important it is for the animals to be at that point at that moment (presence of food resources). Would you give daily data on animals that travel up to 60 km a day to make wrong decisions? We don't do it because we would give misleading and not useful information for the purpose. If one thinks we are not transparent or that we give a number just to give it, we are sorry. For us, data is a serious matter, not information to be used to draw the lottery. Please contact me if you want more information about our species distribution models or visit the website mareterra-erc.org and look for our papers (those were also on board). -------------------------------- - Snorkelling - When you give a service, you can't change it just because you haven't seen the dolphins. If I don't see dolphins in the morning, do we delay departure in the afternoon, notifying customers when? Offer an alternative experience? But what does it mean? I can't compress time-space at will! The snorkelling stop is one. Out of 4 hours, at least 3 hours must be dedicated to monitoring (to ensure a high probability of success). And if by extending the snorkelling I miss the chance to meet the dolphins that may be passing through the area? -------------------------------- - Price reduction - Another thing that I think is wrong is when a customer goes out into the wild to observe wild animals and doesn't get what he/she wants, he/she has to be compensated (or pay less). We charge for our service (see below) not nature. Otherwise, what should I apply to customers who, besides dolphins, have seen whales? A surcharge? Is it thanks to me that the whale was there? No, but we have been able to spot it many kilometers away, this is our job, this is one of the things you pay for. If we see 20 dolphins or do 3 sightings in 3 hours? Do we vary the cost based on the number of dolphins seen? It wouldn't be serious of us. -------------------------------- - Excessive price - Marco when you write to me that the price is excessive if you don't see the dolphins, it is your opinion. Still, you are devaluing my work, my effort to stay focused and attentive to everything including your safety and our talent. We have 20 years of experience with cetaceans, academic degrees, published articles etc. Have you tried to compare the cost per hour against all the other tours in Alghero? You'll be surprised. -------------------------------- Thank you for joining our tour. If you want to try again and ask me whether, in the morning or the afternoon, I will give you the same answer as always: there is no difference between the morning and the afternoon, choose what is more convenient for you. We know very well about their movement and habitat use and we use specific techniques to increase the chance of seeing dolphins. But never forget that dolphins decide where to move based on their biological needs which is something that is not in our control (of course). Kind regards, Fabio
