A beautiful and peaceful place that is well worth a visit. It overlooks all of Moville too. The graves are difficult to read though. If you peak into the skull house you can see some bone fragments.

Hidden from sight this wonderful heritage site is in need of much investment by the OPW. The site is being researched by archaeologists and as thrown up many hidden treasures. We are unfortunately not good at preserving our heritage and rely heavily on others from outside the country.

This is an old religious site up in Moville, Co. Dunegal, Ireland
It is well sign posted and is in good condition with some of the old anti-body snatching graves still in tacked.

Well work a look and to also see the Old Irish Christian Cross also on the sight with amazing views of Lough Foyle.

The Cooley High Cross and Cemetery and its position in the landscape in The Inishowen Peninsula in Donegal, is very important to the early Christian history of the north of the island of Ireland. It is a great pity that the local authorities do not make more of it and update the information. The cemetery has more than 900 graves dating from the 6th century to the early 20th century. In 2015 the cemetery and graves were very precisely surveyed by local people with the assistance of the Bernician Studies Group (check out its website for more information). A geophysics survey was also carried out, with permission, in the adjoining field. It revealed the characteristic shape of an early medieval monastery and revealed that the High Cross at the entrance to the cemetery actually marked the centre of the monastery - a characteristic of other ancient Monastic sites on Inishowen. In 2016 the same people carried out a small excavation in the adjoining field, under government licence, across the double boundary ditch revealed by the previous geophysics. They found evidence of a high status site, in use for hundreds of years. So, if you visit Cooley you will not only see a very beautifully - indeed spectacularly - situated cemetery but you will also be walking on the history of Ireland's golden age of Saints and Scholars. Highly recommended.

There is only room for one car and then it is difficult to get a picture without the car being in it. Cemetery is in great disrepair. A treasure is being lost. Those of us from the US are often fascinated by things older than the founding of the US. The cross from the 9th century hard to imagine and to look at the same hills and scenery people did then is amazing.

Markers would be helpful. There is a flyer you can pick up in many local stores or at the small Library a few doors fro the Clock Restaurant.

Thinking about the age of this cross and how it survived all the history make it amazing. The possibility of connections to pagans and St. Patrick make it even more fascinating. The adjoining cemetery has a skull house that was particularly creepy on the overcast, dim evening we visited.

It just sits on the side of the road, there's next to no place to park a car and is thus amazing that something with such historical value seems to be completely unprotected and uncared for.

A typical Irish attraction, in a field, down a side road, and nothing to persuade you it might be worth a look. In truth, there's not much there, but some of us like to see a 9th century Celtic cross and the graveyard, with it's higgledy-piggledy broken stones and story of the Skull House, even has something of a spiritual effect on a hardened atheist like me.

If in Inishowen, or in particular near Moville, this is definitely worth visiting. There are at least nine Wheeled Crosses on display, one upright at the entrance to the cemetery and the others inside (and marked) on headstones.

One of the slab crosses (Latin) probably dates back to the 9th century, while the Wheeled crosses probably cover the late 9th century through to the 12th century. Note to the tombstone for the Montgomery family, synonymous with the development of Moville (Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery spent much of his childhood at Newpark House in Moville.)

The signage and information panel outside could be more interesting and informative (perhaps Donegal County Council should take note) but this shouldn't detract from a very interesting visit (indeed, stores in Moville have a free information leaflet that they give out to people asking for it about the Cross and cemetery).

Probably one of the most important early ecclesiastical sites in Donegal/Derry.

Cooly, or Cooley, is a townland just south of Moville, in Inishowen, Donegal, and it it here that you'll find the site of a monastery founded by St Finian. It is not easy to find, because for some unknown reason, there is no signage. I knew it was on a steep hill, overlooking the Foyle and Moville, but had to ask a local as to its whereabouts. The chap we asked, told us to follow him, and he drove us straight to it, he could not have been more helpful. Anyhow, if you turn off the main road into Moville, on L6391, and go about a half mile up, you'll see it on your right.

The cross is uncarved, and contains a pierced ring and a hole, and the local tradition is to make a wish, and throw a stone at the hole, and if it goes through, your wish will be granted. I threw several, so lets hope it works!!!

Inside the graveyard is a odd little building, called the "skull house", which is very well preserved, and is possibly a Saint's Tomb. On the floor, your find bones, which we're led to believe are mostly human. Make sure you bring your camera with you, as there are beautiful views from this site.
