The original listing I used for Nomadic Discovery Mongolia only had a full day tour, but I wanted to do a shorter version and contacted them on facebook to see if that was possible. They were quick and efficient with accommodating me and gave me a fair price to just go to the statue and come back. The statue was quite impressive and the drive through the countryside was beautiful. At the beginning of the day, I realized I had forgotten to exchange money at the airport that morning, and my driver was happy to stop at a bank and help me exchange money there.

The only drawback was that my driver was not a tour guide, just a driver. He could communicate in English somewhat, but there was very minimal exchange of information about what I was seeing. (Possibly because I had negotiated for a shorter tour, maybe the full tour gets a full guide.)

Still extremely worth it though! Very easy company to work with!

Booked our fishing in Mongolia through the Nomadic Discovery of Mongolia in September 2018 for 9 days.
Greeted with Munkh at the airport and took us to our hotel. Early the next morning we flew to Moron [Murun], Khuvsgul, where it all happened.
We spent the whole day trying to cover 200 km with nothing more than gravel and mud, all of this is part of the plan - then you understand why not so many people come here. Toyota Land Cruiser Rocks! Goes everywhere!
We stayed in the wooden cabins owned by Munkh - it is a luxury to stay in such a log cabin in this part of the world, even the ger camp where we stayed on the lake Khuvsgul cannot compete with it. Bathroom and common area are clean.
In total we were fishing for 5 full days in the Shisged Tengis basin and biggest Taimen caught was 30 inches long. Not only our guide is fun and talented his outdoor skills are broad; great horseback rider, good fisher and makes juicy tender Mongolian BBQ.
Before we knew it, it was time to return on the dirt road leading to civilization. Spend the night in a camp on the lake Khuvsgul and flew to Ulaanbaatar the next morning.
Overall, 5 out of 5 for the Munkh's hospitality and for this wonderful trip. His English breakfast is literally “bomb” a must try.
Definitely recommended service!

we arrived in mongolia without any concrete plans and were lucky to have met munkh who arranged a last minute 10 days trip that sets out the very next morning. he got gears ready for the 2 of us that was needed. munkh speaks fluent english and our driver, binba was able to communicate in mandarin with us. accommodation arranged for us was fairly comfortable and binba is an excellent cook. he prepares delicious, simple fare when food was not available at our accommodations.

mongolia is an exceptionally beautiful country and the people we met along the way were all warm, friendly and hospitable.

Thank you Nomadic Discovery Mongolia team an amazing itinerary in Mongolia!!! My family, friends and I loved it very much!!! You guys did a great job of arranging every last detail of our overland SUV for 18-day tour to Mongolia for 9 of us. Unfortunately Mr.Munkh was not available to take us but it felt he was there all the way along - he had always been in contact regularly even though he was in Europe.

The local guide and driver were knowledgeable and flexible, accommodating our interests whenever possible. We explored the major sights in Kharkhorin, Orkhon Valley, Gobi Three Beauty and Reindeer stays; throughout we stayed mostly in true Mongolian style yurts in except in Khuvsgul where we stayed in Tee-Pees with reindeer tribe.
Mongolia is a truly unique and last untouched place on this planet and it is truly vast; I did not know that there could be so many different types of lifestyle and culture can exist in one country from Camel herders in the south, horseman in the Central and shamanic reindeer herders in the North. So many good memories and monstrous portioned true Mongolian lamb BBQ.

After an initial research, I had doubt in this tour company but I was wrong. With harsh weather condition and lack of infrastructure It is difficult to accommodate to everyone's needs - surely it is not for the faint hearted!!!
We will back in 2019 autumn for the Golden Eagle Festival
Thank you again!!!

Overall - Amazing trip! I initially chose to go with Nomadic Discovery, over other tour agencies, due to how quickly the owner (Munkh) responded to my emails and how flexible he was with planning our trip details (we booked only about 2-3 weeks before our trip). A family of five (grandmother, two adults, and two children ages 4 and 5); we had our own guide, driver, and vehicle for the duration of our 8-day trip. Both guide (Bugii) and driver were excellent. They were especially helpful with the two kids, which had been a pre-trip concern, but was ultimately not an issue. We did not have any issues with accommodations along the way - ger/camp owners were always expecting us and were gracious. Highlights of the trip were the natural hot springs and of course the Orkhon valley waterfall. Hike to the temple was also a treat. On the last day, Munkh hosted a picnic at a beautiful spot for some authentic Mongolian BBQ. The only reason I give 4 (versus 5) stars is because of the information available prior to the trip -- while Nomadic Discovery was more responsive, some of the other tour providers sent nice (electronic) brochures with pictures of prospective locations, accommodations, recommended packing lists, and instructions for international travelers (such as if/when visas are required). Certainly not a show-stopper, but it would be helpful to have more information, particularly about packing list and itinerary. (We packed way too much! Recommend just one backpack each, plus a "Camel back," because otherwise you'll be spilling water on yourself while drinking to drink in the back of the van on a bumpy road! ;) )

We came here to discover Mongolia. We were expecting something very basic but it was ok - decent toilets! We went through all the things of nomadic lifestyle e.g. how they build their tent etc. We did archery, saw wrestling etc etc. So loads of fun

As an extension to my trans-Siberian trip, I spent six days in Mongolia in July. Due to other tour company's cancellations, I found Nomadic Discovery at the last minute on TripAdvisor. The first time I talked to Munkhbileg, he paid attention to my planned itinerary and my budget. Within a couple of days, he got back to me with a realistic plan within my budget that covered almost all the sites I would like to visit. He explained that there were two sites I wouldn't able to visit because the long distances wouldn't work for the time I had. I appreciated the honesty opinion and went with the itinerary he suggested. When I met Munkhbileg in Ulaanbaatar, he helped me in any way he could to make sure my time is well planned. From there, everything went smoothly. I had a great time in Mongolia and appreciated his help. If I have a chance to go back to visit Mongolia again, I would give Munkhbileg a call.

My friends decided to book our 14 day custom Mongolia tour with Nomadic Discovery based on the rave reviews this company and its owner have received in the past. Whether something has changed with how Munkh does business or it was an unfortunate combination of factors particular to our group, I can not say. However, this tour was overall NOT a great experience and given all the other operators out there on the market, I CAN NOT recommend Nomadic Discovery. I was not involved in the pre-trip negotations. Perhaps if I had been, I would have asked for a lot more clarification than we ultimately received, which may have led to less stress and greater peace of mind, which is, I believe what one pays for in going through an organized tour, particularly when one pays a LOT of money.

First the positives. Mongolia is a beautiful country filled with incredibly generous and hospitable people. It's an ideal place to travel if one is intrepid and willing to go off the beaten track. Our driver was amazing. He navigated the challenging conditions with ease and calm and we felt secure with him at the helm. Our guide was very nice and genuinely concerned for our well being. They became like mother and father to us as we drove thousands and thousands of kilometers together.

In spite of how kind she was, our guide wasn't much of one, rather a nice Mongolian woman who was somewhat able to translate for us. She did not handle the day to day operations in the manner one might expect after paying thousands of dollars. Information on the daily program was sparse; we never knew how long we'd be in the car for or often what exactly we were headed towards. When we did arrive at a point of interest, there was often very little relevant information offered - no historical context, geological or botanical details, etc. Rather, we had to keep asking questions and hope to receive some sort of answer. By the end of the trip, it was obvious that she was frustrated and fatigued - she basically went totally silent on us and extracting anything was impossible.

My real complaints however, lie with the owner, Munkh. From the get go, he was extremely blasse about offering information. We never recevied any kind of welcome letter or acknowledgment once we had filled out all the necessary paperwork and sent in the deposit (which for a while left us wondering if we'd been scammed). When we did actually meet up in Ulaanbaatar, he was very cavalier about giving us anything in writing, making lots of promises that in the end turned out to be false (we were ASSURED we would see Naadam festivals in the countryside which was clearly not made a priority and ultimately we completely missed the celebrations). When it came time for payment, he expected us to absorb the cost of the wire transfers and credit card fees which amounted to hundreds of additional dollars. In my oppinion, a tour operator that deals with foreigners ought to undertake the cost of doing business rather than pass those expenses onto their clients, particularily after a price has already been negotiated. Furthermore, the night before we were supposed to leave for the trip when we were to pay the final balance via his credit card reader, he informed me that his bank didn't accept Mastercard. I wound up having to use my debit card which meant not accruing the reward points and paying out of pocket up front (not a huge deal, but again not really seamless). This general lack of transparency and professionalism unfortunately continued throughout the course of the trip.

The first week went fairly smoothly. The ger camps were nice enough- quiet, comfortable and with decent food. It was the six of us (the four of us, our driver and guide) moving at our own pace, deciding for ourselves what time we would take meals, start driving etc. However, the trip was supposed to be all inclusive but we wound up paying out of pocket for several excursions. It was impossible to know if our guide had merely not been informed by Munkh or if she was skimmimg off the top, but either way, it was off putting to say the least. When I brought it up Munkh promised that we would be reimbursed, but it never happened (he made no attempt at all).

The second week, Munkh arrived with another group and suddenly everything began to change. We paid a premium for a private tour and in the end two additional cars with five other tourists wound up joining us. This meant that our itinerary started to change to accomodate our larger numbers. We were told on several occasions that there was no availability in the ger camps we had intended to go to (why didn't they book in advance?!!??) and for several days we spent a lot of energy wondering what would happen to us at the end of each long hot dusty day of traveling (the AC on our car broke halfway through). The quality of services decreased dramatically, in particular the food, and I began to really question where all our money was going. Furthmore, we had orginally intened to do our loop in the other direction and Munkh convinced us to go counterclockwise instead, citing that we would encounter fewer tourists. Instead it seemed to me that our trip was reversed so he could tack these other two groups onto ours at the same time and therefore double dip. He posited that having several cars was best in the interest of security for crossing the desert, but when vehical issues did arise he was nowhere to be found; he had sped way ahead leaving us to deal with the other car. Additionally, he didn't communicate cleary with our guide nor the driver of the third car (her husband) and on several occasions we wasted lots of time searching for him and the correct route, while again he was nowhere in sight and unreachable by phone.

When I tried to express my concerns to him about our changing itinerary, the stress of the uncertainty and the dimishing quality of services, he handled himself incredibly unprofessionally. He initially tried to blame our guide for having changed the plans. Then he tried to blamed us for booking last minute, even though we had been in negotiations with him for many many weeks. He assigned blame rather acting accountable.

From begining to end I wasn't really confident in him or his business model. Ultimately, he did not rise above and prove things otherwise. He seemed much more concered with getting drunk and trying to get everyone else drunk rather than actually address these concerns in a reasonable manner. In addition to his lack of professionalism, I found him in general to be cocky, manipulative and chauvinistic.

Perhaps it was a perfect storm of unforseen elements. Or perhaps the general atmsphere of how business is handled in Mongolia. Regardless, they money would have seemed much better spent if all the logistcal details had been seemless and the operation run more professionally.

I'm very happy that I selected Nomadic Discovery Mongolia. Proprietor Munkh took time to listen to my ideas, and he worked out a perfect adventure that exactly suited my interests and budget. The trip was fantastic. I will go with this company again when I return in a year for my next Mongolian vacation.
