An amazing visit that truly made me feel inspired and also somewhat heavy in regards to the state of the country today. If you consider that home was a mansion in its day compared to what a mansion is in 2023 it reminds you that everything is relative and excess never leads to more happiness. I could have spent the entire day in the Parlor just imagining what it was like to live in that time. Thank you to the Walton Family for providing access to and preserving such an important reminder to myself and for your contributions to the world. 💛

This is a feature not to miss if you are spending time in Bentonville. The tour of the home gives you a better sense of life in the l800's and the tour includes several interesting stories. Outside, a stroll around the grounds will treat you to a number of different gardens.

On a road trip through Arkansas, my wife and I heard about this place at the Bentonville visitor center. On a warm and sunny afternoon, we decided to take the tour. Our tour guide, Joan, was extremely knowledgeable and provided an interesting presentation on our private tour...we were the only ones who arrived for the 1:30 tour. The home is filled with period artifacts, furniture and a few items from the Peel family. Unoccupied from 1920 to 1983, The Oaks (named for the many trees on the property) had fallen into disrepair, eventually saved by the leadership of Mrs. Sam (Helen) Walton. Sam wanted to raze the home for more parking for his Walmart Supercenter which was built behind the home, but Helen had other plans. The grounds and gardens around the home are equally beautiful. There was no charge for the 1-hour tour, but donations are accepted.

Gorgeous setting, free tour, peaceful atmosphere. The little gift shop has a nice selection of Arkansas souvenirs and natural products!

Beautiful restoration. The tour is free and the docent did an excellent job on the history of the Peel family and the house.

What a great house and story. It is a little odd that you drive into the parking lot of one of the largest WalMarts I have ever seen, but the story of how this home was rescued and how a giant WalMart ended up only yards away is fascinating. The tour is a little under an hour and our guide was very well versed in the history of the house and the family. You can tell that she has spent many hours studying the history of this place. It is very well maintained and the gardens are beautiful. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

An interesting step back in time that was saved from demolition by Mrs. Walton, Sam's wife. There is an interesting story behind this story and its worth a visit.

My favorite part of the museum was museum coordinator and our tour guide, Mariah McElroy. She was extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about sharing the Peel Mansion with us. She really made it come alive! The mansion itself is exquisite and extremely well restored. What a contrast between the photos of the “before” and what it is now. The rooms are extremely well decorated with period furniture the attention to detail is outstanding.

We really enjoyed touring this mansion.
The staff person at the gift shop was welcoming and friendly.
The structure has been nicely restored; and though many of the furnishings are not original, many are of the period.
Our guide was knowledgeable, encouraged questions, and provided an interesting historical perspective on the property.
If one has mobility issues, there are stairs to consider; but there are opportunities to rest throughout the tour.
All and all, this location provides an engaging opportunity to learn more about the area's history.

This was a very brief tour. Most things are not original to the house. We did not get a lot out of our visit. We learned little of the family.

has anyone attended the Drink the Garden event before? Just wondering if it was good? If it was worth battling the heat outside? Any feedback is appreciated :-)

Hi @JohnandKariF - thank you for inquiring about Drink the Garden...of course it's a GREAT event! It will very much be worth "battling the heat." We're also increasing this year to seven mixologists (from four last year). We will have wonderful food besides the beverages. Register today on our website or by calling our office 479.254.3870
