Ok, but missing past wow factor, valid intelligible information, crack like marshmellows, fewer and shorter gators seen. Wife and I and twin teens (16 y/o) thought the trip was "ok" , it was pleasant and relaxing with nice scenery but not like past trips. When questioned after the show, the guide offered half baked responses or simply kept saying, "I don't know"., or blamed lack of energy and excitement and missing items from past trips on "new preserve rules" which he could not comment on much either....

Dec 2022 - we had great weather (70's sunny day) yet many of the trails were closed. We did see 2 good sized alligators sunning but very few birds and a lot of the trees were brown likely do to the recent frost. Wait until the trails are open.

Saw a bunch of alligators just chilling by the boardwalks, along with tons of frogs and dragonflies. Had a great time, was nice and shaded even on a hot sunny day. Very cool place and a perfect way to enjoy nature.

We visited the center and then walked the Bayou Coquille Trail, a real gem that takes you through the swamp and along the bayou on dirt trails and boardwalks. Early wildflowers were blooming, and wildlife was abundant! Saw more alligators than I can remember, snakes, egrets, a bald eagle, two nutria, and best of all, the momma alligator with two babies resting on her back. The trail is smooth and easy, so is very family friendly. Loved taking this walk and was sad when it ended; just wish we would have had time to include the marsh walk trail, too. Would definitely go back to this trail again and again and again.

We found this place which is not very publicized and just LOVED IT ! It was nested behind a building where is a mini museum sooooooooo interesting ! The trail is perfect with boardwalks, everything is really peacefull and natural. We saw gators, birds, frogs, an amardillo. The nature is beautiful with very big treesspanish moss.... it's raw nature and deserves the trip !
Don't hesitate go and check the museum too !

My husband and I decided to walk the trails at the barataria preserve to see what we might come across. We were so glad that we did! We saw about 7 gators, a snake, a swamp rabbit, and countless birds and lizards. I highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to experience the true beauty of the swamps and marshes of Louisiana.

Excellent boardwalks allow you to walk through the Preserve. We saw at least 8 gators (not on the boardwalk) but close enough to see them. Also a couple of snakes. We enjoyed our time here. We walked the entire boardwalk and probably spent almost 3 hours there. Nice visitor's center with interesting and informative displays. Nice bathrooms. We had just finished an airboat ride to the tune of $170. We felt visiting the Preserve was a much better experience. You're not on the water but the Preserve does not charge admission and we saw more wildlife. We would definitely go back again.

Beautiful, raw nature. A great way to see the bayou/swamp country of Louisiana. Alligators up-close in their natural habitat. Boardwalk is well-constructed and easy to walk.

Beautiful preserve with several nice nature trails to take. I didn't find much on the Ring Levee Trail. However, there was a lot wildlife along the Palmetto Trail and Bayou Coquito trails. Did see several alligators, snacks and lizards along the way. The Palmetto and Bayou Coquito trails are mostly boardwalk and is easy to walk. A good portion of the Ring Levee Trail does not have as much boardwalk and was muddy from the rains the day before. The staff at the visitor center is very helpful and there are several displays on view. This is a great break from New Orleans.

My husband wanted a break from the noise and crowds of the French Quarter, so we drove to Barataria and I am so glad we did. This place was fantastic. They have a small Visitors Center with restrooms. The ranger at the Center directed us to trails and told us where to look for gators. The trail through the swamp is largely boardwalk, and would be easy for families or strollers. It's easy to see alligators in their natural habitat, and we also saw snakes and nutria. The plants are beautiful, especially the palms and cypress trees. The preserve also has kayak trails through the water, but we didn't see those. I'm glad we started early (about 9am) as it became more crowded and that changed the experience. I would happily go back again on another trip to New Orleans!

Which is the best trail to see wildlife? Looking at the Bayou Coquille Trail, Marsh Overlook Trail, and Palmetto Trail.

Is there anything to see in the Winter?

I don't know for sure. My visit here was in April. However, because this is a wildlife refuge, there should be birds that migrate to here from the North for the winter season. I have been to other wildlife refuges in the South that do get birds migrating there in winter.
