Hubby and I did a 6 day portage trip in temagami with the dog. We are experienced portages, this was by far the most physically challenging due to having to scale lots of rock. Don’t let this stop you- the most beautiful place!!

We planned for 90km trip, ended up being 108 due to the headwinds and sidewinds while canoeing (had to V the lakes) no matter what direction we went there was wild winds sometimes 1-2ft waves on the lakes. Made for a very great workout!

A lot of the portages are longer than what’s on Jeff’s maps (primarily used these maps) however the portages were beautiful! Lots and lots of rock to hike through, stay high on the rock to give your knees a break from impact :)

Did the river run with 7 waterfalls- this is challenging but HIGHLY recommend- the most beautiful water falls, one after another! Great camp sites on and along the falls. Bridal veil was by far our favourite - set up camp right along the edge of the cliff made for a serene sleep! The challenge for portaging this route is constant up and down elevation due to the falls, we double backed a few times and still made great time getting to our sites.

Hiked maple mountain- wow just beautiful!! Started early in the morning and had breakfast at the top. The map states you need to climb a ladder at the top- this is no longer the case. Another path has been made to bypass this. We actually didn’t see the ladder so not sure if it’s there anymore. Bring tobacco as a sacrifice when doing this hike- hopefully it gives you good weather and good luck!

Would highly recommend temagami, so much respect and history for this piece of land.

Escursioni, pesca e canoa a piacimento. Un posto dove ci si sente liberi.

Started off parking at the Sportmens Lodge(very friendly and helpful advice ) on Kukagima Lake and canoed12 km to Donald Lake to a beautiful camp site about 1/2 way up on the east side on a point with views up/down the lake. Next day we did a day trip and canoed up to the Karl Falls ...beautiful spot where we picniced and swam in the falls. We canoed back to the same site on Donald Lake. The next day we went baack to the entry point on Kukagami Lake.

The Temagami lake system seems to stretch forever and there's plenty of room to feel like the only person on the planet once you get out of the busier northeast arm. When I was in university, I got together with five other friends and we rented a houseboat for a week before school started.

We explored Temagami's gazillion bays, fished until our hearts were content, and ate and played like kings. Canoeing is great if you're in the mood to rough it a little, but when it rains or when the mosquitoes get friendly, it's nice to be able to retreat to the shelter of roof and screens.

There are several companies that offer houseboats. We rented from Leisure Island Houseboats and were not disappointed. I think it cost us each between $140 and $160 so the total rental was about $800. It wasn't the largest boat of our options but it was very well equiped and the best price we could find. Fridge, stove, barbeque, cooking equipment... Hardly roughing it!

Northerners are friendly. If you get the chance, take the plunge and try it. You won't be disappointed.
