My son and I go running and biking back here a lot. It is nicely groomed, lots of wildlife (deer, turkey, raptors, owls, ducks......) to look at and a great little sitting area at the end of the trail. Bring some bug spray or a thermacell. The bugs are not usually bad but can be, better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

I run down the access road a couple times a week. There is so much land there that you cannot access because it is a wildlife refuge. A nice picnic bench under a covered area is there and the few short trails they have are well maintained. Some good raptor watching on the power lines but like it said it is limited.

As others have said this place is remote. I wouldn't recommend going there alone. It is a quiet place to observe nature. Good for bird watching. Definitely bring binoculars. During our last visit we did encounter a deceased animal in the vegetation in the distance and the raptors were doing what raptors do. So we did see a flurry of activity. We've also seen large birds in the lake from a distance...perhaps herrons or egrets and had an interesting time watching them. It would be hit or miss as to whether you might see something other than the lake or the power plant towers in the distance. There is a covered enclosure to observe from...but of course everything is a fair distance away. There are no real walking trails and unless you enjoy being out in the middle of nowhere hoping to happen across some interesting animal life then there is not really a lot to this place. Frankly, I'd rather spend my time at the Carolina Raptor Center seeing birds up close. Those that have been rehabilitated but are unable to be released back to the wild...and it is very close to this place. I suppose beauty is in the eyes of the beholder...some people go to the Grand Canyon and can stay for hours admiring the view...others come and see a bunch of rock...appreciate what it is and are ready to go....that's how I feel about this place. I can say I've been...Frankly, I've been more than once and have never encountered anyone else while visiting. It seems so remote that probably very few people are aware that it exists. Adults might enjoy the view...my teens and younger kids spent their time chasing each other around the parking lot.

This is a no frills place to explore. We've seen all kinds of birds since it is very near the lake. it's kind of remote so be sure to visit with other people.

We were disappointed with our visit to Cowan's Refuge. The road, mainly gravel and with many potholes was about four miles long from the main road, with few signs. It was accessible using my Camry, but I would not recommend trying it with a vehicle unless the suspension is fairly good. When we arrived at the end of the road, there was a gravel circle with two paved spaces on one side for handicapped visitors, that was all. The entire area was fenced off, with no access allowed. Down a short path was a covered pavilion that served as an overlook towards a couple ponds and some wetlands. We saw one squirrel, and one butterfly. Even using my camera's 300x lens, I could not locate one bird in the entire area. There are no restrooms, no picnic areas, just one trash/recycling container. It was an overcast, cool and windy day, so perhaps on a warmer day we might have seen more wildlife.

This is a an area of Mecklenburg County that was never really developed and a good canidate for restoration to a prior year.

They have done a great job. Prairie restoration project has gone great. Good gravel road access but we need more.

Wildlife love this place because no one bothers them. Park is unsupported because no one comes to visit and appreciate.

We need to to keep the park as pristine as possible but make it more user friendly. Don't open the park for explotation but give parents a chance to expose their kids to nature and wildlife. Make it more user friiendly by putting in a few picnic tables, a few tables but don't open up the whole place
