Lovely island hike - mostly flat, great views, easy with kids. Fairly quiet walk with relatively few others in the trail.

My husband, daughter, dog, and I needed a last-minute camp spot to escape the heat with our teardrop trailer. Rosa and Peggy were very accommodating camp hosts, not only were they friendly, they gave us some great sightseeing recommendations. We had a wonderful time walking on the beach, roasting hotdogs by the fire, and birdwatching eagles, herons, and more! Very clean campgrounds with great views and amenities.

We were driving down the coast and stopped here to see the sites. We took the trail to the beach. It is mostly flat through dense coastal forests. An easy walk of about 1 mile each way. Not much of a beach but pretty scenery and good break from driving. Was worth the stop.

We only hiked, the campground was full (4th of July week). From the parking lot, follow the main trail, and stay left. There are a few semi-steep hills, but easy to navigate. The trail loops to the west, and we found an offshoot small trail right to the pristine inland cove beach, and were all to ourselves! Not even another set of footprints.. tiny sand crab and Asian clams are abundant.
Hiking back, we continued on the original trail which faded out and became a game trail..we probably should have gone back the way we came or followed the beach around towards the campground. Otherwise,it's a bit of a challenge getting back to the main trail to say the least. It was a great adventure and we had 3 kiddos under 11 that had a blast.

It was interesting to read the last review. For a large family get together with kids this campground is probably fun but for 2 seniors who enjoy the beauty and solitude of nature it is a different experience. The campground is crowded. The "blue" spot we had for our camper van was immediately next to another couple tent camping. There is supposed to be room for 3 10 x 10 tents (btw - there is an extra fee for just about everything including $11 extra for our 2 dogs) One bathroom for a lot of people. No showers and more expensive than any of the State Parks in the area and they have showers. We had a difficult time with the online registration system and even the host had trouble with it.
That being said if you went at a less busy time it is a nice location. The estuary surrounds the island (not on the ocean). The "beach" is not busy and the Clay Myers Natural Area next to it has a 1 mile loop trail and is interesting. Kids would love the "island". We did see a structure far out that resembled a ship I am sure a family had lots of fun creating.

My daughter found a gem of a campground. Whalen Island fronts an estuary on the Oregon coast just north of Pacific City. It's a Tillamook County Park offering camping of a rustic sort - no hookups, no playgrounds - but the chance to live by an estuary for a few days was magical. Our large family group of 12 included tents, trailers, a camper, and 6 kids. We had plenty of room on the grasslands bordering the shoreline banks. The kids bolted from their car seats to explore the mud banks and the rocks at low tide where they found crabs, clams, sea-stars (starfish), and anemones. At high tide we broke out the inflatable kayak and took turns tucked out of view to watch the bald eagle that visited the far bank at dusk and dawn for a little fishing.
If dining and shopping are your weakness, Pacific City offers plenty of that, and within reach are sandy beaches and all the Tillamook cheese you could wish for.
