Bit something or nothing
may. de 2020
Visited the woodland after a mass drive from faringdon to lambourn to the white horse. This drive is beautiful. Lots of different views and bends and its thoroughly entertaining.

We spotted the national trust sign and lots of cars venturing in so decided to revisit on a less crowded day. The car park is very small. But we got there early enough that we didnt have to contend with anybody to get a decent space.

The woodland itself was practically stinging nettles so was quite disappointed. We have lots of woodland in and around Faringdon so are spoilt for choice. We also walked up the hill to look over the valley which was fun. Don't think we'd visit again to be honest but sated our interest.

Inadequate Car Park
mar. de 2020
We visited on a Tuesday lunchtime aware that the House would be closed but expected to be able to park and explore the garden and surrounding woodlands. Unfortunately, the car park is tiny and we were unable to park. There were just 5 cars and one National Trust van filling up the car park ( admittedly they not very well parked ) and 2 or 3 more spaces not usable due to the recent bad weather. We ended up going to the nearby White Horse Hill…

From the entrance a large herd of deer were visible in the park.

Beautiful dog walk in the woods

Free parking, and lots of beautiful trails through the wood. We saw some other families but it was pretty quiet even though it was Saturday lunchtime!

Interesting History
set. de 2019
I wanted to visit this house after reading the book by Nancy Goldstone " Daughters of the Winter Queen". This house was built by the dashing Earl of Craven for the former Queen of Bohemia, Elizabeth. She was the sister of King Charles I and was married off to Frederick, Duke of the Palatine, luckily it was a love match and she had 13 children. 2 of her sons Rupert and Maurice fought for their uncle during the War of Three Kingdoms (the English Civil War) and their youngest sister Sophie was the mother of George I. Other sisters were very good artists and another was a philosopher. There are portraits of them all in the hallway and up the staircase. These pictures were bequethed to the Earl upon the death of Elizabeth, and unfortunately she died before she could move into the house.
Visits are by guided tour only, it lasts about 30 minutes and ends up on the roof, allowing you a fantastic view over the estate. The rest of the rooms are not open to the public as they contain the private property of the tenant of the house, a certain Pete Townsend!
There is 1 public toilet in one of the out buildings but no gift shop or tea room. The site is only open on Wed and Sat afternoons in the summer so check the NT website before visiting.

Wonderful views
ago. de 2019
Looking for an NT property to visit on the way back from Tetbury to London we found this hidden gem of a property, not far from the M4. The house is tenanted, so only a staircase tour is offered, but our guide was full of information, delivered in a spirited and humorous way, which really brought the house to life. The highlight, if you have a head for heights and can manage 100 steps, is a panoramic view from the cupola. The house is only open 2 afternoons a week and facilities are therefore limited, with a small car park and just one toilet, but that is to be expected at a small property like this.

Unusually surprising house

We visited the NT house and gardens quite recently. The place is quite different to most of the houses owned by the NT. A fairly quiet place with a nice shop and pleasant gardens. Overall, I would recommend Ashdown house.

What a beautiful spot
may. de 2019 • Solitario
This striking house is set in the beautiful Berkshire Downs amidst lush green fields and woodlands. It is only open two afternoons a week so pick your times if you want a tour of the house but the woodlands are open for a good walk or picnic all the time. Well worth a visit although if you want a cuppa you will have to go to the local village.

Beautiful Peaceful location

Even if the house is not open the woods and surrounding countryside are such a pleasure to walk and picnic lots of bluebells in season, wildlife and butterflies and a field with white stones that look like sheep at night! Also a fabulous village shop and Tea Room with home made cakes a mile down the hill in Ashbury. Perfect!

Beautiful bluebells

Lovely place to go for walk, specially at this time of year as there was an abundance of bluebells. I felt this really added something to the visit.

Surprising gem in Oxfordshire
abr. de 2019 • Pareja
We were lucky to visit on a Saturday afternoon as the place is only open weds (.?) and Saturday. The tour guide Mora was really knowledgable and full of interesting anecdotes (footmen) and we all learnt a lot about the historical context of the house and its owners. Super views from roof - look for the WW2 graffiti too.
