Outstanding small professional regional theater in Tysons, VA. The direction and the cast of Columbinus were both excellent!

The quality is SOOO good that the Wall St Journal sent its Theater Critic down to see what the raves were all about. He returned to NY raving.
Located just outside Tysons Corner in a Strp Mall this is a real jewel. I have seen shows on Broadway, Off Broadway, Kennedy Center enjoy Theater etc and 1St stage rivals them at 1/4 the price.
I go regularly and encourage my friends, including one who lived in NY and produced Broadway shows; they come away impressed.

While Broadway continues to produce great theater fare (and some not so great), regional theater is alive and well in Tysons Corner, Virginia. 1st Stage has been reviewed very favorably not only by local theater critics, but also by national critics such as Terry Teachout of the Wall Street Journal. The actors are experienced and excellent--with a few new ones thrown in for most productions--in what are often very challenging parts. While Mary Louise Parker was outstanding in Proof (and many other plays) on Broadway, the 1st Stage production was a true rival. The prices are very low because the theater surroundings are not very exciting, e.g., their retail neighbors include a boxing gym and a doggie day care. But they are hoping to more to better facilities in the next few years as the Tysons area continues to go through major upgrades.

Along the strip in Tysons Corner where car dealers abound, off a side road, you'll find this little theater. One has to admire the effort made by these local artists. Unfortunately, the play I saw there, "Trevor", didn't quite resonate with me.

This my second visit to 1st Stage and this review addresses primarily the venue, not the productions. 1st Stage is located in, what I call, an industrial park/strip mall not far from Tysons Corner Mall. It is not the easiest place to find and after parking the car, you walk up three to four flights of stairs to the theater on the second level of the strip mall. The theater is small with seating for about 150-200 patrons, or less. While this makes for an intimate seating arrangement near the stage, the Jazzercise business next door to the theater produced lots of raucous dance music that completely distracted me from focusing on the excellent stage production. At the intermission, I complained to a staff member and she told me she asked the Jazzercise instructor next door to tone it down, which she eventually did. In the end, I was unhappy to be so distracted from enjoying the excellent stage production by loud dance music emanating from a nearby Jazzercise business. Maybe if 1st Stage becomes popular and succeeds, they can afford to move to a more appropriate (and quieter!) venue for a stage theater.

Lot to say about this place. But shortly it's a neighborhood gem. If you live in Tysons area, it's a great place to go without the traffic hustle. No parking issues. Easy to purchase tickets. Great comfy chairs that don't squeeze. Great ambiance. "One Man, Two Guvnors" was a terrific show. The actors were so talented and know how to keep you up and awake if you go to a late show. 8pm show ended at 10:40pm, we loved it. They deserve a big applause, you feel like you were cheated in expensive commercial broadway shows with so short performances. Your cost is very reasonable: $28 PP. Where else you are going to get such a performance with that money?

Literally hidden--in a light industrial pocket, behind an auto body shop in the posh Tysons Corner area. But the hunt is worth it. We have been to two enjoyable productions here in the last year, one an old chestnut, one a more recent play in current circulation. There is something endearing about a tiny theater (100 seats? 200?) and enthusiastic producers. And, heaven knows, this area needs some good entertainment besides shopping and eating.
