We stopped here while going the full CLOCKWISE circle en route to Hana - it's a "low hanging fruit" - right on the main road, with a free parking lot across from it, it's a no brainer if you drove this far
One of the easier if not the easiest attractions and free of charge, not advanced booking required - it's right there in front of you when you arrive! You can even take a dip in the natural pool - people were swimming here though I want to say during our visit we read somewhere that there is some bacteria during this time in the water and not to go into it... (I read about the bacteria somewhere on FB or other source from the park) but I guess people didn't care about it
No need for an SUV or a AWD to get here - see my full Road to Hana profile review for other details of this area if you are interested planning a similar trip
TIP: very slippery if you want to get closer to the falls, and it's possible, and narrow "pathway" - take your time and be patient... people come here to take pictures and there is very little room on that standing area

We drove out to Wailua Falls, which is right along the Pi’ilani Highway. Unfortunately, we were there during the dry season and the falls were not as impressive as they likely are during the wet season. It was a long way to drive (we came from Kula) for something that was not that impressive.

Beautiful waterfall along the Hana Highway. A must stop. Get out and view and photograph. It is very lovely. Go past the waterfall to a small parking lot. There are several spaces available there.

We went past this falls on the way to the Seven Sacred Pools. This was by far the best waterfall we saw along the Road to Hana.

Parking is a *%#%& but the falls are so pretty! We actually drove the Road backwards and had already hiked the Pipiwai Trail and seen Waimoku falls and were ready for a swim. This was perfect for that! Only downside - it seemed like when we got there, a lot of the people driving the usual route (starting in Pa'ia) got there at the same time (3ish?) so it was a bit crowded.

Yet another reason why you should not drive this yourself. Our highly experienced tour driver was able to squeeze our tour van into a parking spot and he knows exactly where to look. Meanwhile. the Hana Highway was a complete mess with cars attempting to go in both directions and tourists trying to get a good photo while the photographer tries to not get hit by a car.
Yes, the falls are beautiful and makes for great photos, but if I was driving, I am not sure I'd feel comfortable trying to park my car and then getting out of the spot with the amount of cars trying to cram into such a small space.

Don’t waste too much time here taking pictures when the real gem is just up the road. In fact, catch it on the way back. Waimoku Falls is far more impressive and you’ll want to get there early.

Skip this stop and drive on to the Waimoku Falls.
Not much too see.
Limited parking and always full.

How long does it take to hike to the falls after you park?

You may be thinking of another waterfall. Wailua is right on the road in Kipahulu. There is no hike other than a trail about 15 yards or so from the bridge...however you can see and photograph the falls without taking the trial. The other waterfall that you may be referring to is Waimoku Falls. That is actually in Haleakala Nat'l Park and is the stream that feeds Oheo Gulch, aka Seven Sacred Pools. That is a highly recommended and publicized hike that is relatively easy. The only strenuous part is maybe the first quarter mile that increases in elevation a bit. The rest is fairly flat, but includes about an overall 650 foot rise in elevation. It's about a 4-5 mile round trip hike and takes about 2.5 to 5 hours depending on how long you take. Take drinking water with you. Be careful. Although it is tempting to take a swim in the relatively shallow pool...3-feet deep maybe..folks have been killed...and nearly killed by falling rocks, such as myself. I moved off of a rock in the pool about 3 minutes before a huge rock fell 400 feet right where I had been sitting. I was out drying off. When it hit, the rock exploded in fragments that rained down on the entire area. It was about 2-feet in diameter. Would have taken me out. There is absolutely no cell service there...and the nearest help is by foot back out the 2+ mile trail to the ranger station. I urge folks to go. It is beautiful and a beautiful hike through the bamboo forest, but be wary that harder things can fall than water...
