We just visited El Trapiche and came home with coffee. Yeah. We arrived by taxi and the owner gave us a tour right away. He was a great character sharing stories and info about coffee, sugar cane and chocolate. It's not a long tour, but a good amount of time to enjoy.and do something other than island hopping. You may have trouble if you don't speak Spanish that would be the only downside to this if you are doing it on your own.

We visited El Trapiche in Feb 2019, as part of an 8 day Cruise. El Trapiche is very rustic and demonstrates the old methods of extracting cane juice, roasting coffee beans, etc which are still in use today at this location. It was fun and very educational. The local people who operate this site also support the rest of the farm. They were polite, knowledgeable about their work and products, and many of them spoke english so those of who were language limited could participate and enjoy the experience. I highly recommend this farm tour for its experience and just the pure fun which was had.

Good place to view first hand how coffee is processed and aguardiente is made. If you enjoy nature this is the place to go.

Don Cabrera is a riot. The fact that everything is handmade is both awesome and apparent when you taste it. The coffee was amazing. The fresh raw sugar was amazing. The ride out was beautiful. 10/10 would go again.

You can see how sugar cane is processed into sold sugar or distilled into alcohol (try their anise flavored). Also you can have a non alcoholic cane sugar and lime juice drink. If you love coffee, you can see coffee beans being de-hulled, dried in the sun and roasted. Try a sample of the coffee - quite good. Many fruit trees banana and papaya. Worth a trip into the highlands.

We had a guide for half the day and stopped by El Trapiche on our way to Garrapatero Beach. This was an enjoyable experience where we learned first hand from the owner how sugar, coffee, alcohol, and chocolate was produced using the old farming/plantation methods starting from the crop material. We had hands-on demonstrations and participation of squeezing sugar solution from sugar cane, shelling/roasting coffee by hand, distilling alcohol from sugar cane, and cracking open cocoa pods for processing. There was also a chance to sample examples of the the products. Very educational, and worth the 90 minutes or so stop. Kids would enjoy the hands-on activities.

After visiting the Charles Darwin Reaearch Station in Puerto Ayora, we drove 20 minutes north to this family owned business. First hand demonstration of processing sugar cane from stalk to sugar and fermentation/distillation into liquor...with samples. Then a demonstration of coffee bean processing from picking the ripe beans, drying, shelling, and roasting. All done by hand to demonstrate the old family way. Also some cacao precessing as well, although not as well demonstrated. Samples of coffee, chocolate, and some other "mixed" products were also available. Reasonable prices for the coffee to buy and chocolate and liquor also.
