As we drove through the confusing streets of Cusco's Santiago neighborhood, our taxi driver's cell phone rang. It was Adam Weintraub, our host and the owner of Panza del Artista. He had called our previous hotel, got the cabbie's number and called to direct him to their place. That was just the first example of his care and attentiveness to us during our short stay.
When we arrived, we were tired and hungry after a long day of sightseeing and riding from Ollantaytambo.
Adam beckoned us inside their compound and home, which sits on a hillside overlooking downtown Cusco. He graciously schlepped our suitcases to our rooms while we relaxed in his large dining/living room. Then he ordered a wonderful half chicken with fries and delicious salads for a delivery dinner for four that only cost $13!
While we ate and shared a large bottle of beer, Adam gave us ideas about how to maximize our time in Cusco. We slept well, in the very comfortable, spotless, well appointed rooms.
In the morning we met Adam's charming wife Xiomara and his darling son as he was going to school.
The night before, Adam had told us the public market is a must see, in a working class neighborhood of Cusco. He was right. The colors, sounds, smells and interesting faces of the vendors is not to be missed.
Then we followed his recommendation and took an inexpensive cab ride up to Sacsayhuaman to see the incredible masonry of the Incas. At an overlook, I was able to see his and his lovely wife's home and pretty green backyard.
Walking down, into the San Blas neighborhood, was easy, even in the rarefied air of Cusco, and was another great idea of Adam's. The restaurant in San Blas, Pacha Papa, that he suggested was excellent. Drinks were especially imaginative. My wife had a coca tea/mint/lime non-alcoholic concoction that was amazing!. Our adobo we each ordered was tender, succulent and flavorful.
We continued on the basic itinerary Adam suggested, to the Plaza de Armas and then the Monasterio de Santa Catalina and the Coriancha. It was all quite impressive, but so much must be left to the imagination. The Incan temple must have been a site to behold with walls covered in gold to reflect the light of the sun it was designed to worship, until the Spanish led by Pizarro sacked and looted it.
We returned to Adam and Xiomara's to recount our day. Later in the evening, we took his advice again and ate at a fabulous place near the Plaza de Armas called Baco Wine Bar and Restaurant. The thin crust pizza was awesome and the salad with roasted marinated chicken, caramelized onions, roasted red peppers and goat cheese, was the best salad I've ever eaten. Period.
Adam is a wealth of information and a very good photographer. He leads photography workshops in the area, several times per year and is published. We even saw his book for sale in the Lima Airport.
The only possible negative, is for light sleepers (which I thankfully am not). Take my advice and use the soft ear plugs Adam provides, to dampen the noise of the nearby trains.

Consejo sobre las habitaciones: I suspect first floor rooms are quieter.

The quiet sunny garden, the view down to the busy street below and across the valley to the Crystal Christ made the outside of this B&B. While inside we were made to feel at home by the whole family. This was much, much better than a hostel.

Adam Weintraub and his charming wife, Xiomara, made us feel right at home in their lovely Panza del Artista bed and breakfast style lodge. We had an upstairs room overlooking the city in the distance and the garden directly below us. Only a fifteen minute walk from the center of Cuzco, it was a great location and very reasonably priced. We were traveling with our 15 year old daughter who was in language school in Cuzco, and the family kept an eye on her while we took a five day trip outside of Cuzco. Not your average "hotel stay!" We hope to return to this warm and special place!

I truly felt like I was at home away from home. The whole family took me under their wings in different ways and I left feeling like I will be back. I was always surprised at how clean everything was and welcoming everyone was. The whole family were all supportive and interested in what I was doing, but also gave me space to get work done if I needed, it was the perfect blend. They were always patient with my Spanish. I really enjoyed the location because I liked being away from the tourists and the neighborhood always felt safe..... a true sign is seeing teenage girls walking at night alone with their purses! The wireless internet actually worked, the water was hot, and the pillows were the best I've even had in all of South America.
