We did not book anything in advance in Aguas Calientes and after arriving by train we just walked from hostel to hostel on Av Pachacutec to find a place for the night. We settled for the Ima Sumac. They offered us a room with three beds for USD 30 including breakfast. The room was rather worn out and somewhat smelly but basically clean. Also, the bathroom looked okay and had 24 hour hot water. The staff was really friendly and we left our bags at the hostal whilst visiting Machu Picchu. The breakfast was not breathtaking but was on the table shortly after 4:30 in the morning. All in all nothing too spectacular but also nothing to really complain about.

Don't Stay if You Like Your Belonings!

We stayed here for one night on our way to Machu Picchu (just like everyone). The room was adequate for $25/night - clean, moderately comfortable, and cetainly convenient to the rest of the town. We told the hostal we would take the early 5:30 AM bus to Machu Picchu, and were told a continental breakfast would be served by 5 AM, and we could keep our bags in their locked storage all day. Great! The next morning, we were down to their breakfast room a few minutes after 5. There was defintely no breakfast - in fact we had to wake up the night desk guy so we could store our bags and be let out the front door. Fine, whatever. Not a big deal. When we returned to the hostal after a full day of exploring the ruins, we came to pick up our bags. They were kept in an unlocked room, and had quite obviously been rummaged through. No attempt was made at even keeping it secret. Fortunately, all of our valuables were either on our persons, or locked away in a bag's inner compartment. Don't want to think about anyone who has to leave anything of value here..... Not a bad place, but obviously stay AT YOUR OWN RISK! …
